Simple Verbs in Haitian Creole ‘Vèb’ (Present and Past Tense)

This post covers simple verbs in Haitian Creole. This post covers present tense and past tense only. I have included a few pronouns so we could tie them to the verbs.

For example:

I = Mwen in Haitian Creole

You= Ou

He/She/It = Li

We = Nou (in this case the speaker in including himself or herself in the word ‘Nou’

You = Nou (in this case the speaker is NOT including himself or herself in the word ‘Nou’

They = Yo

  • Also keep in mind that for third persons in present tense, the verb ends with the letter ‘S’ in English, but that is not the case in Haitian Creole like you will see in the Video.

I eat (first person, present tense) = Mwen manje or m manje

I ate (first person, past tense) = Mwen te manje or m te manje

You run (second person, present) = Ou kouri

You ran (second person, past tense) = Ou te kouri

He drinks (Third person, male, present) = Li bwè

He drank (Third person, male, past tense) = Li te bwè

She cries (Third person, female, present) = Li kriye

She cried (Third person female, past tense) = Li te kriye

It begins (Third person, a thing, present) = Li kòmanse

It began (Third person, a thing, past) = Li te kòmanse

We walk (First person, plural, present) = Nou mache (the speaker is included in the ‘nou’ this case)

We walked (First person, plural, past) = Nou te mache (the speaker is included in the ‘nou’ in this case)

You speak (Second person, plural, present) = Nou pale (the speaker is NOT included in the ‘nou’ this case)

You spoke (Second person, plural, past) = Nou te pale (the speaker is NOT included in the ‘nou’ this case)

They go (Third person, plural, present) = Yo ale

They went = Third person, plural, past) Yo te ale
